Katey Sagal
An extremely gifted, versatile performer
adept in both drama and comedy, actress/singer Katey Sagal became a household
name in the 1980s as the fabulously brazen, undomesticated Peg Bundy in the
long-running Fox series Married... with Children (1987). During the show's
lengthy run, she was nominated for three Golden Globes as well as two American
Comedy Award. Peg Bundy's character was popular, and Katey continued to make a
name for herself, not only staring in sitcoms but playing roles that were quite
different from the character that caught her to the attention of. In 2008, she
portrayed the character of Gemma Teller Morrow on Sons of Anarchy (2008). This
role was the matriarch of a Hell's Angels-like California biker band. In 2011,
her portrayal of this role was recognized with an award for her performance in
the Golden Globe Award as Best Performance by an Actor in a Television
Series-Drama. Catherine Louise Sagal was the daughter of Sara Zwilling, a
singer and Boris Sagal, a noted director of film and television. At age 5 she
began her first show in Los Angeles. She also trained in voice and acting at
the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, California. She started her
singing career as a waitress in her "salad times" and continued to
perform with "The Group With No Name." After that she was fortunate
enough to be able to connect with Gene Simmons (and his 1970s rock group KISS),
and got a job. She gained invaluable experience performing as a backup singer
for Simmons, Etta Jones, Tanya Tucker, and Olivia Newton-John. She was also
dynamic in live performances together with Bette Midler during Bette's wild
avant-garde stage show of the late 1970s/early 1980s.
