Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay discovered her love for art through her grandmother Denise. Her aunt, a night-shift nurse, let her explore art and literature as well as the theater in the daylight. DuVernay immediately became enthralled when she showed her an old 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay learned that art is a great vehicle to engage in social activism. DuVernay's mother also had a the social sensitivity and taught DuVernay how to communicate through art. DuVernay was inspired by her time in Selma to later direct the documentary of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay started broadcasting journalism at the age of a young student. Her career began working as an assistant at CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being asked to look over the rubbish inside the house that belonged to a member of jury. The tasks that she had to complete left her unhappy and so, after deciding not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right out of college as an intern at an unassuming studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first PR agency. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and promotional campaigns, such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
